Applying for a UK visit visa may seem challenging, but with the right information, it can be a straightforward process. If you’re a Qatari citizen or resident visiting the UK, here’s a guide so you’re all set for your trip.

The UKVW and ETA

Before we go into UK visit visas, note that not all individuals based in Qatar may necessarily need one.

If you’re a GCC national or a Jordanian citizen, then you’re eligible for a UK ETA (electronic travel authorisation). GCC stands for the Gulf Cooperation Council and its members are Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.

The ETA has replaced the UK visa waiver program, allowing GCC nationals to visit the UK without a traditional visa. Currently, the ETA now includes Jordanian citizens. As the UK rolls out the ETA program in other countries, more nationalities will be eligible for it.

You should apply for an ETA if you are visiting the UK for no longer than six months for purposes such as tourism, visiting family and friends, business, or short-term studies.

If you’re living in Qatar but are not a GCC or Jordanian national, you must apply for a UK visa. You can do this online or via a British embassy/consulate. Read on to learn more about your UK visit visa options.

UK Visit Visa Types

A UK visit visa is an official document that permits non-UK residents to enter the United Kingdom for a short period, usually up to six months.

This visa is vital for anyone who wants to travel to the UK for tourism, business meetings, visiting family and friends, or other short-term purposes.

There are several types of visit visas available, depending on the purpose of your trip:

  1. Standard Visitor Visa: The standard visitor visa allows you to perform leisure activities, visit family and friends in the UK, engage in business activities, or go on short-term studies.
  2. Work Visa: If you plan on working in the UK, you will need to apply for a work visa. There are different types of work visas depending on your job, duration of stay, and employer sponsorship in the UK.
  3. Student Visa: If you’re planning to study in the UK, obtain a Student Visa (formerly referred to as the Tier 4 Visa). This allows you to study at educational institutions in the UK.
  4. Family Visa: If you are reuniting with a family member who is a UK resident, you will need to apply for a Family Visa.
  5. Transit Visa: If you are passing through the UK on your way to another country, you may need a Transit Visa.

Choose a convenient date and time for your appointment. The Doha VAC is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. from Sunday to Thursday.
